Every livestock farmer knows the pain of counting cattle. It’s time- consuming, repetitive, and often inaccurate—especially when you have a large herd or a busy season. The Bloutand Cattle Counting system changes this completely by offering an automatic, online monitoring solution using Bluetooth technology. No more counting heads over and over. No more uncertainty about the whereabouts of the animals. With Bloutand, you will receive a notification when your herd moves outside of the boundries, directly from your phone, stay updated and make better decisions without stepping out of your bakkie.
How the System Works
Bloutand uses a Bluetooth-enabled ear tag, similar in look and size to a normal identification tag. But instead of being passive, this tag sends out signals continuously whenever it comes within range of the gateway—a compact receiver placed in key locations around the farm.
You can place these gateways at locations where the cattle pass by like: water troughs, feeding stations, entryways or kraal gates. Every time a tagged animal comes near one, the system logs the animal’s ID, the location of the nearest gateway it connects to, and the specific time and date.
That data is then sent through to your mobile app online, letting you see:
- Which animal passed which gateway
- When it was last detected
- Which animals haven’t been seen recently
This helps you track your herd’s whereabouts automatically, without changing your routine or needing to chase animals down.
On-Time Alerts and Clear Oversight
If a tag isn’t picked up when it should be, or an animal’s movement seems off, the system flags it. Maybe a gate was left open. Maybe a calf got stuck. Maybe there’s a fence down. With Bloutand, you’ll know sooner—not a day or two later when it’s too late.
This kind of on-time feedback reduces losses, shortens your reaction time and gives you peace of mind— especially during calving, droughts or rotational grazing cycles. Instead of guessing whether all of your animals are still there, or how many made it through the gate, you’ll have an exact number.

Designed for Everyday Farm Use
Bloutand is built with practicality at its core. There are no complicated tools, no technical setup nightmares. If you can use WhatsApp, you can use this system.
Everything runs from a clean, user-friendly mobile app. You open it, and you immediately see what’s happening with your animals. There’s no need for extra devices or third-party software. The system has been designed for the productive farmer who has many priorities to focus on.
And because the tags broadcast automatically, your workers do not have to scan anything or press any buttons. The system captures the data as cattle move across the farm.
Easily Scalable—Big or Small, It Fits
Whether you run 30 cattle or 3,000, Bloutand grows with your operation. You can start small with a few tags and expand as needed. You can also add more gateways as your needs grow or alternatively, reduce or move gateways without complex installations to focus only on specific herds, camps or critical areas. This flexibility is perfect for mixed farming operations, rotational grazing or if you simply want more oversight without a full overhaul of your daily systems.
Plus, since Bloutand covers a range of up to one kilometre around a gateway, a large area can be covered eliminating the need for a large quantity of equipment.
