The Big Pack Demo Day, held on October 28th, was an exciting event for farmers and contractors in the Northern Cape. The event offered a firsthand look at the latest in baling technology, with attendees witnessing the advanced capabilities of the High-Density Balers, machines engineered to redefine efficiency, power, and bale density.
The New Holland BB 1290 HD is an advanced high-density baler designed to deliver up to 22% higher-density bales than conventional balers, and 15% more than Big Baler PLUS models. The baler combines power and precision with innovative technology to maximize productivity and minimize operating costs, making it ideal for contractors and large-scale producers.
The SmartShift™ gearbox is a standout feature, utilizing a two-speed start-up system that ensures smooth baler engagement, which reduces strain on the tractor’s driveline and improves longevity. The gearbox shifts automatically from first to second gear, reaching a maximum speed of 1440 rpm for rapid baler acceleration. A robust hydraulic axle suspension ensures optimal ground-following capability and stability. The Loop Master™ combines the key benefits of double and single knotting technology which in return eliminates twine offcuts, which are currently left in the field or can even find their way into fodder. The Loop Master™ technology saves up to 3km of twine during the production of 10,000 bales.
The Baler is designed for easy visibility and accessibility. Its short, narrow drawbar and reflective yellow color provide a clear sightline to the pick-up area, making it easier to manage high-capacity baling with improved efficiency. The baler’s 2.35- meter MaxiSweep™ pick-up system, featuring a fifth bar of tines, enhances pick-up performance at high speeds and increases throughput. Constructed with durable poly material tine bands, the baler ensures smoother crop flow and reduced maintenance.

The CropCutter™ system offers cutting options with either 15 or 29 knives, allowing for a medium- or shortcut depending on crop needs. Each knife is individually spring- protected, ensuring reliable cutting action under varying loads. The improved plunger design, delivering a 748mm stroke with 58% more force than the PLUS models, helps achieve the baler’s impressive density. Additionally, the baler’s
precompression chamber enhances uniformity, ensuring each slice reaches the optimal density before it’s compressed into the bale.
One of the baler’s defining innovations is its density ring system, featuring three top- mounted and two side-mounted double-acting cylinders for precise control. This design allows the baler to close its density doors quickly, increasing efficiency and producing consistently dense bales. With a 4.05-meter bale chamber, one of the longest in its class, the New Holland BB 1290 maintains high-density productivity
even in hot conditions.
Other notable features include the hydraulically operated twine box, that holds 36 XL twine spools for extended baling sessions. New Holland BB also added the IntelliView™ IV touchscreen controls for centralized monitoring of functions like bale density, length, and PTO engagement. The baler’s IntelliCruise™ system, powered by ISOBUS III, allows for automated tractor speed adjustments to optimize feeding rates, increasing output by 9% and reducing fuel consumption by 4%.
With FieldOps™ connectivity, operators can monitor over 27 machine parameters in real-time, including bale weight, moisture, and density, from the comfort of their office. This data is also available through the FieldOps™ mobile app, providing insights for efficient bale management in the field.
The New Holland BB 1290 HD is built to handle demanding field conditions with larger tires that reduce soil compaction and has a steerable tandem axle that improves turning capability. A hydraulic suspension system distributes weight evenly across all four wheels, enhancing field stability and minimizing tire wear. Additionally, the SmartFill™ II system uses sensors on the plunger to ensure uniform left-right
filling, indicating if adjustments to baler positioning are needed.

Equipped with LED lighting for full 360° visibility, the baler is suitable for night operations. Convenient maintenance features like hydraulic swing-out twine boxes, an automatic greasing system, and accessible service panels reduce downtime and keep the baler running smoothly. The Baler also includes a host of optional features, including a moisture measuring system, camera monitoring, and a CropSaver
preservative kit.

During the demo day, the combination New Holland T7.315 HD tractor & BB 1290 HD baler produced over 100 bales within 2 hours without any hassles. The BB 1290 HD was also able to provide the heaviest bales of the day at an average of 735kg at 80% density
