Ammonia (NH3) gas is one of the most valuable nitrogen sources for increasing crop yields in agriculture. Marius Erasmus from Pro Gas Solutions, a brand under VS Agri, explains the process of applying ammonia effectively to the soil. The process starts by establishing storage capacity on the farm with large tanks that can store up to 25 tons of product. These storage tanks are refilled by specially equipped road tankers that transport the gas to the farm. From these storage tanks, smaller tanks, which can easily move between fields, are filled. These smaller tanks, in turn, keep the tanks mounted behind agricultural implements supplied with gas. Ammonia is transferred from tank to tank under pressure.
The application level of ammonia is controlled by a precision system that automatically adjusts according to the speed of the tractor, ensuring the gas is evenly applied at a constant pressure and rate. Marius emphasizes that the system is easy to calibrate, and the process is very efficient, which naturally improves overall productivity. Moreover, the entire process is user-friendly and requires minimal labor.
Carel du Preez’s Experience
Carel du Preez, a farmer using NH3 gas, has had an excellent experience with the process. He uses a Bok.I - Ripper to inject the gas up to 250 mm deep into the soil, with no gas escaping behind the ripper's teeth. The process is highly effective, with a roller behind the implement sealing the soil neatly. Carel is very satisfied with the ease and efficiency of ammonia as a nitrogen source and has integrated it into his fertilization program, effectively addressing his crops' nitrogen needs.
He found that ammonia works well across his soil spectrum, whether wet or sandy and experienced no issues with losses due to gas escape. Although application on wet soil can be more challenging, the results were still satisfactory. Carel’s experience reinforces the practical benefits of ammonia and its simplicity and effectiveness in various soil conditions.
