The energy giant, SASOL unveiled a powerful message: the company is ready to redefine its relationship with the South Africa’s agricultural sector. With a strong heritage, local innovation and a new mindset, SASOL is not just supplying fuel — it’s becoming a committed partner in farming's future.
Innocent Pereira, SASOL’s Vice President of Commercial Sales, introduced the company’s new agricultural strategy with clarity and purpose. SASOL is excited about its evolving role, innovations and potential partnerships with farmers as well as the industry.
One of SASOL’s most exciting new initiatives is renewable diesel, a biofuel made from biodegradable materials like used cooking oil and non-food crops. This project aims to create a circular system where farmers grow crops, SASOL refines them into diesel and the fuel is returned to the farms. It’s a cost-effective, sustainable and locally driven energy solution that supports both agriculture and environmental goals.
A Legacy Built in South Africa
SASOL, with over 75 years of operational history, remains one of South Africa’s most iconic industrial companies. Unlike many global oil suppliers who import their products, SASOL manufactures fuels and lubricants domestically through its major facilities in Secunda and at NATREF (National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa) in Sasolburg.
The company’s Cape Town laboratory represents the pinnacle of its technical capabilities. It is home to cutting-edge research, staffed by some of the country’s brightest minds — including what is believed to be the highest concentration of PhDs in science in South Africa, on par with universities. One striking feature of this lab is its use of a Ferrari engine to test lubricant performance — a symbol of both the company’s commitment to excellence and its innovative spirit.
This local production and testing allows SASOL to design products specifically for South African conditions, enabling it to respond more effectively to the needs of domestic industries — especially agriculture.
A Farmer-Centric Approach
SASOL’s new direction is rooted in a deep understanding of the modern farmer’s challenges. Pereira explained, agriculture is not a uniform industry. It spans multiple domains: from tilling to food processing, packaging and logistics. “We understand that farming is a hybrid operation,” he noted, “and our solutions must be just as dynamic”.
A key part of SASOL’s strategy is moving closer to farmers — not just supplying them through third parties but engaging with them directly. Traditionally, SASOL operated in the B2B (business-to-business) space, supplying fuel and energy products through co-ops and middlemen. While that model still exists, the company is now evolving toward building direct relationships, offering tailored solutions based on the specific needs of farms — large and small.
By understanding a farm’s entire value chain, SASOL aims to offer services that reduce costs, improve machine reliability and maximize efficiency at every stage — from the field to the market shelf.

Innovation Across the Value Chain
SASOL's offerings for agriculture is comprehensive and built on innovation:
1. Premium Fuels and Lubricants
SASOL supplies a wide range of transport fuels, including high-performance ultra-low sulphur diesel derived through its proprietary technology. This fuel enhances the lifespan and operational efficiency of mechanized farming equipment, reducing maintenance costs and potential breakdowns.
Alongside this, SASOL delivers specialized lubricants — not the generic kind found at filling stations, but highly engineered solutions crafted for specific processing and food-production needs. These lubricants meet strict specifications and performance metrics to ensure food safety, machine uptime and regulatory compliance.
2. Total Fluid Management System
One of SASOL’s most promising innovations is its Total Fluid Management System (TFM) — a tech-enabled platform that provides complete visibility from fuel and lubricant delivery to vehicle consumption. Originally developed and tested within SASOL’s own mining operations, this system helps reduce fuel loss, track maintenance cycles, and ensure optimal machine performance, to extend equipment lifespan.
In agriculture, this system could be a game-changer for mega-farmers and co-ops who manage vast fleets, fuel consumption and lubrication. Farmers can track every litre of fuel and lubricants, monitor which vehicle used it and tie that usage to maintenance records — enabling a proactive rather than reactive approach to managing machinery reducing equipment total cost of ownership.
3. Unwavering Product Support: Standing Behind Every Drop
SASOL offers unwavering product support by standing behind every litre of fuel it supplies. If equipment fails, SASOL provides onsite diagnostics, advanced lab testing in Cape Town, and technical assistance. Working closely with OEMs, the company ensures transparent, science-backed investigations and full accountability. Even when fuel isn't at fault, SASOL helps prevent future issues.
This proactive approach builds trust and positions SASOL as a reliable technical partner, not just a supplier—essential in agriculture where equipment uptime is critical. In agriculture, where equipment is the lifeblood of operations and downtime can mean significant financial losses, thus reliability and responsiveness is invaluable. For SASOL, product support isn’t a department — it’s a philosophy.
Support, Accountability, and Trust
Pereira emphasized SASOL’s commitment to full accountability. “We back our product 100%”. If a fuel-related failure occurs, SASOL dispatches a technical team, collects samples and analyse them in its lab. If SASOL is found responsible — although this has never happened to date — it commits to compensating the farmer and preventing future issues.
In addition, SASOL collaborates with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), involving their mechanics in product validation. This ensures SASOL’s fuels and lubricants are aligned with the specifications of leading agricultural equipment.

Sustainability and Decarbonisation: A Shared Mission
As the global conversation around decarbonisation intensifies, SASOL is taking bold steps to align with net-zero targets by 2050. But more than that, SASOL wants to help its customers decarbonise too — especially those in agriculture.
One of the most exciting developments is SASOL’s progress in renewable diesel, a biofuel derived from biodegradable materials. This initiative isn’t just about reducing carbon emissions — it’s about building a circular, closed-loop system with farmers.
Here’s how it works: farmers grow non-food crops on underutilized land; SASOL processes these into bio-oils, refines them into renewable diesel and supplies the resulting clean fuel back to those same farmers. It’s a win-win scenario — cost-effective, sustainable and proudly local.
The Road Ahead: Partnership and Possibility
SASOL acknowledges that while it has laid the groundwork, it is still early in its agricultural journey. The company currently works directly with about five mega-farmers, including operations in beef, tomatoes and forestry, and is eager to expand.
The key to SASOL’s future success will be its ability to form partnerships without replacing existing infrastructure. Rather than duplicate assets owned by co-ops or farmers, SASOL wants to integrate into existing systems, offering solutions that are flexible, tailored and respectful of legacy operations.
The ultimate goal? To manage a farmer’s needs end-to-end — fuel delivery, storage, dispensing and tracking — so that the farmer can focus solely on what they do best: farming.
A New Companion in the Field
SASOL’s entry into the agricultural sector isn’t about selling products — it’s about solving problems. From operational efficiency to sustainability, SASOL is positioning itself as a companion to farmers, not just a supplier.
Through innovation, accountability and local investment, SASOL is showing that it understands what makes a farm tick — and it’s ready to power that journey with reliability, transparency, and shared growth.
The message to farmers is clear: SASOL is here, it’s listening, and it’s building the future of agriculture. The company is here to listen, collaborate and innovate alongside the people who keep South Africa’s food systems alive.
